Stevens Point Brewery
Fifth-oldest continuously operating brewery in the United States.
Stevens Point Brewery, a regional American brewery based in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, holds the distinction of being the fifth-oldest continuously operating brewery and the third-oldest privately owned brewery in the country.
The brewery was established in 1857 by George Ruder and Frank Wahle. During the American Civil War, in 1864, it supplied beer to Union troops. Andrew and Jacob Lutz purchased the business in 1867, and the Lutz family ran it until 1897, when it was sold to Gustav Kuenzel. In 1901, the operation was formally organized as the Gustav Kuenzel Brewing Company, and the following year it was renamed the Stevens Point Brewing Company. Ludwig Korfman acquired a controlling interest in 1924 and reorganized it as the Stevens Point Beverage Company. The brewery faced local competition from the mid-1860s through Prohibition in the 1920s, when its remaining rivals shut down. In the 1950s, the brewery began using cans. In 1973, Point Special brand beer was named the top American beer in a taste test reported by Chicago Daily News columnist Mike Royko. By the 1970s, the company was owned by Felix and Ken Shibilski. In 1990, the brewery started selling its products outside Wisconsin, entering Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Minnesota. The Shibilskis sold the company in 1992 to Chicago-based Barton Beers Ltd., a unique acquisition for Barton because Point beer was its only domestic product line—all other offerings were imports. Barton planned to link Point sales to its Mexican brand, Corona, but when Corona sales surged, the Point brand became a distraction. In 2002, Milwaukee real estate developers Joe Martino and Jim Wiechmann returned the company to Wisconsin ownership. That same year, the brewery added gourmet sodas to its lineup. In 2003, Point Special won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in the premium lager category. In 2005, the brewery purchased four beer brands from the James Page Brewing Company. By 2008, its products were distributed across 18 states. For nearly 20 years, the brewery brewed and bottled Karl Strauss Brewing Company brands until production moved elsewhere in January 2009. Annual brewery capacity expanded to 100,000 barrels in 2011 and to 150,000 barrels in 2013.
As of 2025, the company ranks as the 23rd-largest craft brewer in the country and 35th largest overall.
