Nakawa Market sits in the Kampala neighborhood of Nakawa, about five kilometers east of the city center along the Kampala–Jinja Highway. One of Kampala’s 51 markets as of mid-2018, it ranks among the city’s largest fresh produce hubs. By June 2010, it hosted over 7,000 vendors. The market draws both expatriates living in Uganda and local shoppers, who tend to visit on Fridays and Saturdays.
Background
The land on which Nakawa Market is built belongs to Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). Prior to the Authority's creation in 2011, the Nakawa Vendors Association managed the market. However, revenue collection was sub-optimal and garbage collection was abysmal.
When KCCA tried to take over management, the Association at first resisted, then went to court and sued the Authority. The lawsuit was dismissed with costs in 2015. As of August 2018, Nakawa Market is managed by KCCA.
