The 1976 European Cup final was played at Hampden Park, Glasgow, on 12 May 1976. Bayern Munich beat Saint-Etienne 1-0 for their third straight European Cup, becoming the third club to do so after Real Madrid and Ajax.

Gerd Muller had an early goal ruled out for offside. Saint-Etienne had the better chances in the first half: Dominique Bathenay and Jacques Santini both hit the crossbar with Sepp Maier beaten, and French fans later called Hampden's goalposts "the square posts".

In the 57th minute Muller was fouled 20 metres out; Franz Beckenbauer tipped the free kick to Franz Roth, who scored. Saint-Etienne brought on Dominique Rocheteau but could not equalise.
