The German Football Association initially restricted two teams from the same city to the new top flight, forcing Bayern to wait until 1965 for their debut. This head start allowed 1860 to enjoy a remarkable golden era throughout the mid-1960s. This period of dominance concluded with a league runner-up finish in 1967, marking the club's most successful stretch before decades of instability.

Decades of Instability and Revival

Following their peak in the late 1960s, the club entered a prolonged cycle of relegations and financial crises. They were demoted to the Regionalliga Süd in 1970 and spent seven years fighting for promotion, only to be immediately relegated again upon returning. The situation worsened in 1982 when severe financial troubles forced them down to the third-tier Amateur Oberliga Bayern after being denied a license. A brief resurgence occurred in the 1990s under president Karl-Heinz Wildmoser and manager Werner Lorant, who invested heavily in talent like Olaf Bodden, Daniel Borimirov, and international stars such as Abedi Pele and Davor Šuker.

This strategy helped them secure a fourth-place finish in the 2000 Bundesliga season, earning a spot in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers against Leeds United. However, mounting debts eventually led to another crisis in 2017 when investor Hasan Ismaik refused to fund their license, resulting in an administrative drop to the fourth tier before they managed to regain promotion.
