Pindad SS1

Indonesian service rifle based on the FN FNC, adopted in 1991.

Last updated

The SS1 was adopted into Indonesian service in 1991 and is now being phased out in favor of the Pindad SS2.[1][2] The Indonesian armed forces and police use the Pindad SS1 as their standard assault rifle, a weapon derived from the FN FNC.[3][4] This carbine operates via a gas system, has a folding stock, and was built to satisfy NATO specifications.[1]

How it changed

The Indonesian Army intended to adopt these as standard infantry rifles, but the BPPT in 1982 advised against domestic production due to high costs and long development time.[5][6] BPPT then proposed licensing proven foreign designs, and six assault rifle types were evaluated.[7] The HK33 was the top choice but was canceled due to its complex technology and unfeasible local production.[8][6] The M16A1 was also considered but canceled because the US limited production to 150,000 units and restricted component manufacturing.[9][6]

Production began at PT Pindad's Kiara Condong factory in 1984, and the rifle was officially designated SS-1.[8][6] Field experience in 1976 sparked the concept for a new assault rifle to succeed the SP series battle rifle.[8][6] A prototype, the SS-77, appeared in 1977; its design and gas-operated rotating bolt mechanism came from the ArmaLite AR-18.[8][6]

What the maker and period sources say

The Airspace Review article states that before the SS-1, Pindad's first domestic assault rifle was the SP-1, a modification of the Beretta BM-59 Mk.1.[6] The ARMAS article describes Pindad as a significant actor in global light weapons manufacturing.[10] It records that after the military acquired 10,000 FN FNC rifles, Pindad obtained a manufacturing license for the FNC in 1984.[11]
