Stanford Robert Ovshinsky (November 24, 1922 – October 17, 2012) was an American engineer, scientist, and inventor who earned more than 400 patents over fifty years, primarily in energy and information. His inventions include the nickel-metal hydride battery, used in laptops, cameras, phones, and hybrid cars; flexible thin-film solar panels; flat-panel liquid crystal displays; rewritable CDs and DVDs; hydrogen fuel cells; and nonvolatile phase-change memory. Through his 1940s and 1950s work in neurophysiology, neural disease, intelligence in mammals and machines, and cybernetics, he founded the field of amorphous and disordered materials. Amorphous silicon semiconductors now underpin many technologies and industries. Ovshinsky was self-taught, with no college or graduate degree.
He was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, then the heart of the American rubber industry, the elder son of Lithuanian Jewish immigrant parents who left Eastern Europe around 1905. His father, Benjamin Ovshinsky, from Lithuania, and mother, Bertha Munitz, from what is now Belarus, were working-class. During the Great Depression, Ovshinsky became active in social causes, inspired by his father—a generous, liberal, cultured activist who collected scrap metal with a horse and wagon, later a truck—and by the Akron Workmen’s Circle, a Jewish immigrant organization focused on social justice. This instilled a lifelong commitment to labor rights, civil rights, and civil liberties.
Before graduating high school in June 1941, Ovshinsky worked as a teacher, tool maker, and machinist in rubber-industry shops. During World War II, he and his first wife, Norma Rifkin, moved to Arizona, where he worked in a Goodyear plant’s tool room near Phoenix. Returning to Akron before the war ended, he founded his own machine company, Stanford Roberts, in a barn. There he developed and patented his first invention, the Benjamin Center Drive, named after his father—an automatic high-speed center drive lathe. After selling the company to New Britain Machine Company, the lathe helped produce artillery shells in volume during the Korean War. Meanwhile, Ovshinsky deepened his study of human and machine intelligence, reading neurophysiology, neurological disease, and cybernetics research, and briefly corresponded with Norbert Wiener.
