Sakizō Yai

Sakizō Yai was born on January 13, 1864, into a samurai family of high standing in the Nagaoka Domain (now Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture). The Yai household had held over 300 koku for generations, but when Yai was six, his father died and the family went bankrupt. He was then raised by his mother and uncle.

At age 21, in 1885, Yai created a continuous electric clock that ran directly on a wet-cell battery he had built. While other electric clocks existed, they relied on conventional spring-driven movements that used electricity only to wind the spring. Yai’s design was a major step forward, and in 1891 it became his first electric patent in Japan—though earlier electric patents had already been granted since Japan's patent system began in 1885.

In 1887, Yai succeeded in inventing a dry cell battery. However, he could not afford the patent application fee, so the first Japanese patent for a dry battery went to electrician Ichisaburo Takahashi. Meanwhile, Carl Gassner had patented a dry cell in Germany in 1886, and Frederik Louis Hellesen had done the same in Denmark in 1887.

In 1893, a seismograph from Tokyo Imperial University was displayed at the World’s Columbian Exposition. The stored-charge batteries used in that device amazed visitors.

Yai died suddenly on June 1, 1927, at age 63, from acute pneumonia while suffering from gastric cancer. He is remembered as a Japanese businessman and inventor.
