Giuseppe Zamboni (June 1, 1776 – July 25, 1846) was an Italian Catholic priest and physicist. He is best remembered for creating the Zamboni pile, an early type of electric battery related to the voltaic pile.
Zamboni was born in Arbizzano, a village near Verona. He studied at the Seminary of Verona, earning the title of Abbot, then took a position as Chair of Philosophy at the Municipal School of S. Sebastiano, which functioned as Verona’s university. He later shifted his focus to physics, resigning from philosophy, and became a Professor of Physics in 1805 at the Royal Classical School of Verona. His interest turned to electricity, then a subfield of physics, and his first publication, *Della pila elettrica a secco* (On the dry electric pile), appeared in Verona in 1812. This was the first of several works he wrote on the subject.
Zamboni built a pile that could keep a light pendulum swinging for a very long time. The pendulum was placed between two oppositely charged piles, and it oscillated due to alternating attraction and repulsion. This “electromotive perpetual pendulum” was widely described after Luigi Valentino Brugnatelli’s *Giornale di fisica* published it in December 1812 and January 1813. In 1814, Zamboni modified the design, producing one of the first electric clocks. He presented the device to the Royal Society of London in 1815, and it was mentioned in a letter from Sir Joseph Banks to Francis Ronalds. Ronalds visited Zamboni’s Verona laboratory in 1820 and again in 1858, where he saw a clock that had been running for fifteen years.
Perpetual motion fascinated Zamboni, and this idea appears throughout his work. At the time, the conservation of energy was unknown, and the dry pile seemed to provide an endless source of electrical energy. His piles were more powerful and durable than earlier versions due to improved design and construction. Notably, the Zamboni pile is “dry” only in that it lacks a liquid electrolyte; the paper discs absorb moisture from the air, which acts as a conductor.
Zamboni belonged to several learned societies, including the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Accademia nazionale delle scienze, and the Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere.
