Aigaleo B.C., also written as Egaleo, is a Greek professional basketball club from the Athens suburb of Aigaleo. Officially named Aigaleo A.O. B.C. (Greek: Αιγάλεω A.O. KAE), the team now plays in the Greek B Basket League, the country’s third division.
History
The parent athletic club was founded in 1931 as Ierapolis Athletic Union (Greek: Αθλητική Ένωσις Ιεράπολι). The basketball division was established in 1956 by Alexandros Stavropoulos. It took the club fifty years to reach the Greek First Division, debuting there in the 2006–07 season. During the 1950s and 1960s the team remained in the lowest local third division until 1971, when a new categorical system allowed it to qualify for a higher league.
In 1973 and 1974 Aigaleo won two league promotions and competed in the third-tier Greek B Basket League for the 1974–75 and 1975–76 seasons. For the next twelve years the team played in the first local league (A E.S.K.A.), except in 1981–82 when it was in B E.S.K.A. after relegation in 1981. In the late 1980s and early 1990s Aigaleo participated in the fourth-tier Greek C Basket League for six seasons, but was relegated again to the local league in 1994.
In 1997 the club won the A E.S.K.A. championship, and in 1999 it returned to the Greek B League for six seasons. Aigaleo won the Greek B League championship in 2004, and after a short stint in the Greek A2 Basket League, it was promoted to the top-tier Greek Basket League in 2006. Dimitrios Karvelas coached the team from 1999 to 2006, after which Thanasis Skourtopoulos took over.
