Robert Michael Archibald was a Scottish professional basketball player who played as a power forward or center. Nicknamed "The Flying Scotsman," he was drafted 32nd overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in 2002, becoming the first and only Scotsman to play in the NBA.

Over his NBA career, he averaged 1.2 points and 1.6 rebounds per game across 44 appearances. Born in Paisley and raised in Kirkliston and Dunfermline, Archibald did not pick up a basketball seriously until age 14. He later represented Great Britain 46 times, including at the 2012 Summer Olympics, after which he retired.

Early life and high school

Robert Archibald was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, and grew up in Kirkliston and later Dunfermline. His father, Robert Sr. (Bobby), played for Murray BC in Scotland and earned over 90 caps for the Scotland and Great Britain national teams. Robert himself did not start playing basketball seriously until he was 14.

He began his career with local side Dunfermline Reign, playing at under-16, under-18, and under-21 levels at the same time. By his mid-teens, he also represented Scotland at junior level. In September 1997, he moved to the United States and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1998, alongside future MLB player Ryan Howard.

College career

Archibald committed to the University of Illinois in summer 1998. As a freshman, he played 32 games with 8 starts, averaging nearly 15 minutes per game. His sophomore year included 30 appearances with 20 starts. In his junior year, he started only two games but increased his minutes, points, rebounds, and blocks compared to the previous season.

As a senior, he started almost every game and again raised his output across the board, averaging double-digit scoring and over 5 rebounds per game in just 22 minutes, helping Illinois reach the Sweet 16. He also collected more fouls than any other Big Ten player that season. Under coach Bill Self, Illinois won the Big Ten Conference in both Archibald's junior and senior years.

Professional career

Robert Archibald remains the only Scottish-born player ever to reach the NBA. The Memphis Grizzlies selected him 32nd overall in the second round of the 2002 draft and signed him to a two-year contract. He appeared in just 12 games for Memphis before being traded alongside Brevin Knight and Cezary Trybański to the Phoenix Suns for Bo Outlaw and Jake Tsakalidis. On December 26, 2003, he was traded again, this time to the Orlando Magic.

A week later, he was dealt for the third time that season, to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Mengke Bateer and Remon van de Hare. He played 30 games for Toronto. His final NBA game came on April 9, 2004, a 66–74 loss to the Detroit Pistons where he recorded four rebounds but no points. Over his NBA career, he averaged 1.2 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.

He later spent four seasons in the Euroleague with Scavolini Pesaro, Joventut Badalona, and two seasons with Unicaja Málaga. In July 2011, he signed a one-year contract with CAI Zaragoza. Archibald retired after representing Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He also played for Great Britain at EuroBasket 2009 and EuroBasket 2011, and had previously represented Scotland at junior level.
