Mike Trout is an American outfielder who has spent his major league career with the Los Angeles Angels. Born Michael Nelson Trout on August 7, 1991, he has been chosen for the All-Star Game 12 times, won the Silver Slugger Award nine times, and won the American League Most Valuable Player award in 2014, 2016 and 2019.

He also finished as MVP runner-up in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2018. Many observers consider him the finest player of his generation and place him among the best the sport has produced. He led the AL in wins above replacement in each of his first five full seasons and captained the United States at the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

Lore & Background

Trout was born in Vineland, New Jersey, and raised in nearby Millville, where he grew up cheering for the Philadelphia Phillies. His father Jeff had been a Minnesota Twins draft pick in 1983 and spent four years in the minors. As a boy Trout played shortstop and wore #2 for his hero Derek Jeter.

At Millville Senior High School he pitched a no-hitter as a junior and, after moving to the outfield as a senior, hit 18 home runs, a New Jersey high school record. He had committed to East Carolina University, but the Angels took him 25th overall in the 2009 MLB draft and signed him with a $1.215 million bonus. After rising through Cedar Rapids, Rancho Cucamonga and Arkansas, he debuted in the majors on July 8, 2011, and won the 2012 AL Rookie of the Year Award unanimously.
