Background
The Barbara Ann's Motel and its attached barbecue restaurant opened in 1967, founded by Delars Bracy, a criminal attorney from Ruleville, Mississippi, and his wife Bertie. They named both businesses after their daughter, Barbara Ann, who eventually took over operations. The Bracys initially ran the restaurant with two of Delars' brothers, one of whom had restaurant experience. The restaurant was an early adopter of the aquarium smoker, a Chicago creation, experimenting with it in the 1960s alongside Leon Finney Sr. Original pitmaster Mack Sevier developed many of the signature recipes before leaving to start Uncle John's BBQ; his apprentice Garry Kennebrew succeeded him. After a temporary closure in 2015, the restaurant reopened, only to shut down permanently during the COVID-19 pandemic.
