Gameplay

X: Unmei no Sentaku is a fighting game that uses the same in-game engine as Taito's versus fighter Psychic Force, sharing its mechanics and control method. Each character has about eight special moves, many of which did not appear in the TV anime version. Madhouse, the producer of the TV anime, supervised the game's original technique names and graphics. The voice actors recorded most of the technique calls to match the anime. The game includes five Heavenly Dragons: Kamui Shiro, Sorata Arisguawa, Arashi Kishu, Yuzuriha Nekoi, Subaru Sumeragi, and the unlockable Karen Kasumi. The five Earth Dragons are Fuma Monou, Kusanagi Shiyu, Yuto Kiigai, Nataku, and Seishiro Sakurazuka. Characters Fang Xiao and Souki were removed from battle as they were not suitable for action; Souki and Firebrick were excluded for balance reasons but appear in modes such as Omen, Dream, and Beast. The game has two different endings depending on the characters chosen.

Production

Producer Masa, who had overseen Clamp's work X professionally and privately, conceived the game after hearing that a TV anime would start in June 2001. Planning progressed quickly, leading to production with Bandai. Clamp drew the package illustration specifically for the game, and a jigsaw puzzle of that illustration was offered as a first-production bonus, prompting quick preorders. The staff included approximately 200 illustrations and 40 drawings from the anime, plus movies featuring non-player characters such as Kotori, Ding, and Gen. The voice actors are the same as those in the TV anime. Madhouse created the opening and ending movies, which focus on battle scenes and were completed at the very end of the schedule. The theme song is the same as the TV anime's theme, "eX Dream" by Masatoshi Nishimura (credited as Myuji), released on CD by Victor Entertainment; the producer asked Myuji to record some parts but remained vague about this. Creating three-dimensional polygon characters that resembled the TV anime from every angle was difficult, especially for Kamui, Fūshin, Arashi, and Seishiro, which underwent numerous revisions. Masa felt the effort to use the PlayStation's display capacity to its limit had paid off.
