Doc Brown's DeLorean Destruction
Lightning strikes and timeline shifts threaten the time machine's survival across eras.
In the Back to the Future trilogy, the DeLorean time machine faces existential threats that border on total destruction, most notably during high-voltage lightning strikes and timeline alterations. The vehicle is ultimately destroyed by an oncoming train when it arrives back in 1985 at the end of the third film. Reader's Guide
In the first film, Marty accidentally travels to 1955 and must ensure his parents meet while securing enough energy for the DeLorean to return home. The climax involves channeling lightning into the car at the clock tower, which succeeds in sending Marty back. The second installment introduces a new threat where Biff steals the Almanac and alters history. To fix this, Marty and Doc return to 1955, where a lightning bolt strikes the DeLorean and sends Doc back to 1885. In 1885, Marty damages the car's fuel line while evading a pursuit. Doc and Marty use a steam locomotive to push it to 88 mph, and when it arrives back in 1985 a freight train destroys it.
