Background
In July 2014, Avicii told Rolling Stone he had worked on 70 songs for the album and planned collaborations with Jon Bon Jovi, Billie Joe Armstrong, Chris Martin, Wyclef Jean, Serj Tankian, and Matisyahu. He described the album as more song-oriented. On 2 March 2015, he performed at Australia's Future Music Festival. Several songs from his UMF 2015 set, including "Waiting for Love", "For a Better Day", "City Lights", and "Sunset Jesus", were leaked online under the name "Attack". Avicii premiered "Waiting for Love" on 22 May 2015, co-produced with Martin Garrix. He announced via Twitter nearly a month later that the album was finished after two years of work. On 4 August 2015, "For a Better Day" featuring Alex Ebert was announced as the next single, and on 28 August, he released "For a Better Day" and "Pure Grinding".
Singles
Four singles were released from Stories: "Waiting for Love" featuring Simon Aldred (22 May 2015), "For a Better Day" featuring Alex Ebert (28 August 2015), "Pure Grinding" featuring Kristoffer Fogelmark and Earl St. Clair (28 August 2015), and "Broken Arrows" featuring Zac Brown (first released 29 September 2015 as a pre-order single, becoming official in October 2015). Two promotional singles were also released: "Ten More Days" featuring Zak Abel (30 September 2015) and "Gonna Love Ya" featuring Sandro Cavazza (1 October 2015).
Critical reception
Stories received generally favourable reviews, with a Metacritic score of 64. David Jeffries of AllMusic gave a positive review, calling the album pleasing, alive, and diverse. Maura Johnston of The Boston Globe noted the album drags at the end, particularly a reggae-lite track with Wyclef Jean and Matisyahu, but said it hits big when it hits. Michaelangelo Matos of Billboard praised "Talk to Myself", "Touch Me", and "City Lights" as direct Daft Punk homages. Mac McNaughton of The Music felt the album played it too safe, while Jim Carroll of The Irish Times said it offends by its very inoffensiveness.
