Championship Off-Road Racing

Sanctioning body for short course off-road racing, 1998–2008.

Championship Off-Road Racing, known as CORR, oversaw short course off-road racing in the U.S. from its founding in 1998 until it folded due to bankruptcy in 2008. The Traxxas TORC Series took over its Midwest events in 2007, and the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series filled the gap on the West Coast in 2009, inheriting most drivers and the same race structure.

History

CORR was created in 1998 by ESPN announcer Marty Reid. It became the premier short course off-road racing series after most drivers from the SODA series moved to CORR. Jim Baldwin purchased the series in 2005. In October 2008, Baldwin canceled two Las Vegas rounds, citing the credit crisis and difficulty covering costs. He subsequently filed for bankruptcy and abandoned CORR's facilities in Chula Vista, California.

Classes

CORR featured ten classes. The eight truck classes were Pro 4, Pro 2, Pro Spec, Pro Lite, and Trophy Kart (Junior I, Junior II, Modified). The three buggy classes were Pro Buggy, Single Buggy, and Light Buggy. Pro 4 trucks were full-size, four-wheel-drive utility vehicles from a manufacturer with at least 5,000 production units.

Other notable drivers

Jason Baldwin, son of owner Jim Baldwin, died in a plane crash on November 19, 2005. Brendan Gaughan competed in Pro-2 in the 1997 Winter Series and 1998 season. Jimmie Johnson won the 1997 Winter Series Pro-2 championship at Glen Helen Raceway, CORR's first event after taking over from SODA. Rodrigo Ampudia became the first international driver to win a CORR race.
