Plot

Seventeen-year-old Alex Forbes, a bright student from a privileged background, is arrested for murder after his roommate Nigel Colbie dies suddenly. Forensic psychologist Sally Rowe is brought in to assess him. Through flashbacks, Alex describes his time with Nigel at boarding school, where Nigel—a withdrawn boy obsessed with death and taxidermy—slowly inserts himself into Alex’s life. Their bond turns poisonous after a mutual friend, Josh, dies under suspicious circumstances; Alex suspects Nigel was responsible. Nigel later helps Alex with an essay and introduces him to the Brotherhood, a secret group descended from the Knights Templar. He tells Alex they are both meant for a sacred role within it, symbolized by a Jack of Spades card bearing the inscription “MY BELOVED MARACLEA” on its back. After a local girl named Susan rejects Alex’s romantic advances, she is found murdered, her body surgically dissected and posed. Nigel recounts a Templar legend about necrophilia involving a woman named Maraclea, whose grave was violated in a ritual for power. He pressures Alex to repeat the act with Susan’s corpse, insisting Alex, as her only love, must do it to fulfill their destiny. Alex seems horrified and refuses, but later Nigel taunts him, saying he could smell Alex on her. Alex’s denials grow weaker, and Nigel declares it no longer matters, as Alex can still have his Maraclea.

Production

The film was shot on location in Yorkshire, England, and South Australia, as an Australian–British co-production. Hall scenes were filmed at Bradford Grammar School in Bradford, while school chapel scenes were shot at Giggleswick School near Settle in North Yorkshire. External estate shots were taken on the Carlton Towers Estate, a Victorian stately home. Train scenes were filmed on a stationary New South Wales U Set Single Deck Interurban Car TF6011, now owned by Richmond Vale Railway Museum in New South Wales.
