Born in Kew, Melbourne, in 1969 and raised in Ferntree Gully, Canavan trained as a graphic designer and ran her own freelance design studio, The Telltale Art, from 1995. A do-it-all position at the Australian fantasy magazine Aurealis—handling art, cover editing, manuscript reading, and even stuffing envelopes—gave her the foothold to write in her spare time. After turning twenty-five and enrolling in writing courses, she battled through rejections before her short story "Whispers of the Mist Children" won the 1999 Aurealis Award for Best Fantasy Short Story. The Black Magician Trilogy followed, and by 2010, with The Ambassador's Mission, she was a fully established author.
