History
Alfred Weaver Allen, a Melbourne confectioner who had worked for MacRobertson's, started his own confectionery business in 1891 at his Fitzroy shop. By 1909, his company was Melbourne's third-largest confectionery firm, behind MacRobertson and Abel Hoadley. It went public in 1922. In the 1950s, Allen's relocated to a South Melbourne factory designed by architect Joseph Plottel, built on land that once held Holden's first Australian plant and Kraft Walker Foods. Its animated neon sign was a well-known local fixture until 1987. After World War II, Allen's stopped making chocolate but grew to become Australia's largest confectionery company. Rothmans Holdings bought it in 1985, and Nestlé took over two years later. Since 1982, Allen's has produced confectionery in Broadford, Central Victoria, running its factory 24 hours a day, five days a week.
Adjustments to product lines
In October 2014, Allen's reduced the Killer Python from 47 grams to 24 grams, adjusting the price accordingly. Spearmint Leaves and Green Frogs were discontinued in June 2015 due to poor sales; Spearmint Leaves returned in 2020 and again in 2024. A Nestlé spokesperson noted that Red Frogs outsell the green variety ten to one. In June 2023, Allen's announced the discontinuation of Fantales because of declining sales.
