Gameplay

The Ruins of Lore plays as a typical role-playing game, requiring the player to advance through scenarios and navigate dungeons while fighting enemies. Unlike many console RPGs, battles are not random; monsters are visible in the dungeon alongside the characters, and combat begins only upon contact. Winning battles grants experience points for leveling up. As in Lufia II, some monsters, called Disc Monsters, can be captured and used in battle. These monsters can be fused with Eldin, Torma, or Rami for three turns once a character's Installation Points gauge, which fills when the character is hit, reaches its maximum.

Plot

The story takes place twenty years after the defeat of the Sinistrals by Maxim. The Kingdom of Gratze, a growing military superpower, allies with a mysterious man named Ragule and declares war on bordering nations. Their goal is to scour the world for a powerful monster called The Beast, which would ensure their conquest. The game follows a young man named Eldin traveling the world in search of adventure. He meets a young priestess named Rubius, who seeks mystic shards and stones to enter a fabled holy land. One location she needs is Ragule's fortress, and upon arriving they realize Ragule must be stopped for the world to know peace.
