Release

Released on September 17, 2013 via Atlantic Records/Word, the Fading West EP featured three tracks from Switchfoot’s ninth studio album, which came out on January 14, 2014. A limited physical version, sold only during the band’s 2013 fall tour and on their website, added the bonus song “Fading West,” a cut absent from the full album. The EP participated in a “complete my album” offer, letting buyers get the remaining Fading West tracks for free once the album dropped in January 2014.

Critical reception

Ian Zandi of Indie Vision Music rated the EP a perfect five stars. He wrote that Fading West is not the end of Switchfoot but the opening of the next chapter in their globetrotting journey to pursue love and justice. He noted that the EP may not be the best Switchfoot songs ever written, but it serves as a sample of what to expect in the movie and on the soundtrack, providing a theme song, a classic Switchfoot song, and the next possible step in their musical endeavors.
