Background and composition

After a long legal battle with Blackground Records, JoJo got back into the studio to create new music. She had first signed with that label at age twelve, and after finally leaving, she joined Atlantic Records. Before III, she put out the mixtape Agápē and the EP #LoveJo on her own. For III, she worked with producers and writers like the Family, Benny Blanco, Jason Evigan, Diane Warren, and MNEK. JoJo said she tried out different styles but wanted the EP to feel cohesive, pointing to her interest in dance and house music and the challenge of finding the right mix. She called the EP a “triangle” of three singles, each showing a different side, and described it as an “appetizer” for a future album. The tracks blend diva pop, with “When Love Hurts” sitting alongside mid-tempo ballads such as “Say Love” and “Save My Soul.”

Promotion

JoJo confirmed that her upcoming album would be released through Atlantic Records before the EP came out. On August 5, 2015, she performed some singles live at the iHeartMedia Music Summit and used the hashtag #JoJoFansFirstSweeps to invite fans to a listening party where they could hear the album early. She then traveled to five cities, kicking off in Boston on August 12, playing shows at various clubs and giving interviews to Teen Vogue, Jezebel, MTV, VH1, Time, and Billboard. The lead single from the EP, "When Love Hurts," arrived at mainstream U.S. radio on November 17, 2015. Its music video debuted on MTV on September 28, along with remixes from artists like Sweater Beats. "When You Say Love" reached number 7 on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart, number 27 on Pop Digital Songs, and number 23 on the Dance Club Songs chart. The video for "Say Love" came out on October 27, and the song hit number 33 on the Pop Digital Songs chart on September 12. "Save My Soul" had its music video released on January 8, 2016, and also peaked at number 33 on Pop Digital Songs. All the EP's songs first appeared on JoJo's official SoundCloud page on August 20, 2015, and were made available on digital retailers the next day, ahead of her third studio album Mad Love (2016). On October 5, 2015, JoJo announced her second big North American tour, the I Am JoJo Tour. It covered 23 cities, starting November 2 at Minneapolis's Triple Rock Social Club and ending on her 25th birthday, December 20, at the Hi Ho Lounge in New Orleans.
