Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book

First game of the Mysterious storyline in the Atelier series.

Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book

Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book is a 2015 Japanese role-playing game developed by Gust and published by Koei Tecmo. It marks the 17th main installment in the Atelier series and launches the Mysterious storyline, also being the first title where Koei Tecmo handled Western publishing instead of NIS America. An enhanced version, Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book DX, came out for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Nintendo Switch on April 22, 2021. A sequel, Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream, followed on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Windows on February 25, 2022. The game introduces a completely reworked world and a new alchemy system. Sophie gains recipe ideas through activities like harvesting, exploring, fighting, or story events, which she uses to improve her alchemical knowledge. During synthesis, the player sees predetermined shapes representing ingredients and arranges them on a puzzle board symbolizing the cauldron. This visual trial-and-error process rewards perfect arrangements with bonuses, and the chosen materials affect the final item's quality, offering high freedom based on player preference. Once ingredients are gathered, alchemy follows five steps: selecting a cauldron, applying ingredients, arranging shapes for bonuses, reviewing those bonuses, and picking which to keep. After crafting, the story advances, and the "Dollmake" feature lets players equip up to four item categories to customize Plachta's appearance using crafted costumes. More alchemy unlocks more customization options. A weather system changes the game world based on time and conditions, affecting shop discounts and enemy types. The story takes place in the small, warm town of Kirchen Bell, during an era when alchemy is just emerging. Sophie runs an atelier alone, possessing a mysterious ability to combine items into new ones, but without a mentor, her attempts often fail. She then finds a talking, moving book and aims to restore its memories and human form.

Lore & Background

The game is set in the small town of Kirchen Bell during the dawning era of alchemy. The protagonist, Sophie Neuenmuller, runs her own atelier studio and possesses a mysterious power to combine items, but lacks a mentor. She discovers a talking book named Plachta, who has amnesia and was originally an old book from the atelier's bookshelf. Sophie's goal is to restore Plachta's memories and her former human form. The game features a reformed worldview and a new alchemy-centric system where players obtain recipe ideas from activities and arrange ingredient shapes on a puzzle board representing a cauldron. The 'Dollmake' feature allows customization of Plachta's appearance using crafted costume items. A weather system affects the game world based on time and weather, influencing shop discounts and enemy appearances.
