Atelier Lulua is set many years after Atelier Meruru in the Arland Republic. The protagonist, Elmerulia 'Lulua' Frixell, is the adopted daughter of famed alchemist Rorona Frixell and studies under the alchemist Piana in the town of Arklys. The story begins when a book called the Alchemyriddle falls from the sky onto Lulua's head; while others see it as blank, Lulua can read advanced alchemic instructions that expand as she explores. She embarks on a journey with allies through ruins created by an ancient people, discovering that Arland's alchemy derived from those ruins, which are tied to a growing instability in the land. Lulua befriends a girl named Stia, revealed to be one of the Operators—artificial beings that maintain the ruins. The ruins' technology is slowly failing, threatening to collapse Arland, which is built atop the great ruin of Fellegalaxan. The Alchemyriddle is revealed to have been sent from a parallel timeline by another Lulua who failed to save Stia. Multiple endings are unlocked based on quests completed and relationships; in the best ending, Lulua saves Stia while stabilizing the ruins and synthesizing items to save alternate versions of Stia and Arland.

Reader's Guide

Atelier Lulua was developed by Gust's Nagano Development Department, with planning beginning in December 2017. Producer Junzo Hosoi had long wanted to create a fourth Arland title with illustrator Mel Kishida, and the game was intended to celebrate both the tenth anniversary of the Arland trilogy and Gust's 25th anniversary. Production ran parallel with Atelier Ryza, with Atelier Lulua described as a refinement of older gameplay design while Atelier Ryza was an evolution. The music and writing staff included veterans of all previous Arland titles. The gameplay systems combined and refined elements from earlier Arland titles and later subseries. The Alchemyriddle went through multiple versions before finalization, with focus on balancing its design. The battle system was a refined version of that used in Atelier Lydie & Suelle. The story's theme was 'Inheritance,' represented by Lulua's status as Rorona's daughter. The tone was more overtly comical with manga-inspired expressions. Hosoi drew inspiration for his approach from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Japanese and Western journalists praised its gameplay systems and the Alchemyriddle mechanics, but were mixed on its story and graphics.
