Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream
A turn-based RPG with alchemy and a parallel world.
Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream, a Japanese role-playing game from developer Gust, launched in February 2022 on Windows (via Steam), Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4. It marks the 23rd installment in the Atelier franchise and the fourth within its Mysterious subseries. The story takes place between the events of *Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book* and *Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey*. It is only the second game in the series to feature a returning main character, following *Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy*.
Combat is turn-based, with a party that can expand to six characters. On each turn, the player picks an action for every character. The team splits into three front-line members and three in support. Attacking builds Technical Points (TP), which can be spent on defensive maneuvers—like swapping a support character in to block an attack via "Support Guard"—or on linked "Twin Attacks" between a front-row fighter and their support partner. If the front group is wiped out, the backup squad takes over. Actions cover damage types that exploit elemental or other weaknesses, stat-altering buffs and debuffs, and healing. This two-team battle system resembles that of *Atelier Lydie & Suelle*.
Progression involves both main story tasks and optional sidequests, which are posted on a bulletin board in the central town of Roytale. These sidequests reward players for defeating monsters or locating rare items. Party members also have personal storylines the player can pursue; completing them raises their Friendship with Sophie and unlocks bonuses.
World exploration relies on weather-altering gems, each tied to a specific climate. For instance, using a rain gem makes boxes and barrels float, letting Sophie skip across them, while the same area without water becomes impassable but exposes the land beneath. This creates puzzles, especially when multiple water levels can be frozen into platforms with snowy weather. Gems are only usable at matching altars, have limited charges, and must be refilled through alchemy.
A new gathering mechanic appears: some spots glow intensely, triggering a minigame that can yield superior versions of sought-after materials.
Alchemy follows the Mysterious subseries’ basic structure with new twists.

Lore & Background
Atelier Sophie 2 is a turn-based role-playing game where a team of up to six playable characters faces enemies, divided into three front members and three support members. Attacking grants Technical Points (TP) used for defensive Support Guards or linked Twin Attacks. The game features a two-team battle system somewhat similar to Atelier Lydie & Suelle. Traversal requires weather-changing gems with finite charges, used on altars to alter environments and solve puzzles. A new gathering mechanic involves a minigame at glowing spots for better materials.
Reader's Guide
The alchemy system uses the basic structure from previous Mysterious games with new mechanics. Players discover recipes via a Recipe Tree and synthesize items in four stages: selecting output, choosing materials, placing materials on a square grid, and selecting inherited traits. Materials contribute elemental effect levels, and link components create chains for higher abilities. Assist skills from other party members trigger with long links. A super success chance increases with filled grid squares and rows or columns of five pips. The game includes main plot tasks, sidequests from a bulletin board in Roytale, and character-specific storylines that increase Friendship with Sophie and unlock bonuses. The plot follows Sophie searching for her mentor Plachta in the parallel world Erde Wiege, meeting a younger Plachta and her grandmother Ramizel. The story involves confronting the goddess Elvira and investigating a new monster breed called Groll.
