Derby de la Riviera

The Derby de la Cote d'Azur is the match between AS Monaco and OGC Nice, the two major French clubs on the Cote d'Azur, the French Riviera; it once also covered games involving AS Cannes, until that club fell into the amateur divisions. The rivalry is first of all geographic, as the two cities are only about 20 kilometres apart, and the clubs spent many seasons together in the top flight, including nine in a row from 2002 to 2011. Monaco has had the upper hand in the head-to-head record, more money and more European football, which sharpens the rivalry, and matches have at times ended in violent clashes between supporters.
