Harmer chose to work with producer Marcus Paquin, whom she had not collaborated with before, because she wanted to be on her best game after a ten-year gap between albums. Paquin described Harmer as an artist whose songs do not require many embellishments, and said his main challenge was avoiding overproduction or interfering with her material.
