Lore & Background
Gretchen is identified as a former Armenian intelligence officer and one of the four assailants who took Sarah and others hostage during an arms deal gone wrong, ultimately killing her before escaping. Charlie tracks her down in Paris, where he follows a lock-picking tutorial to break into her apartment. He discovers her appointment at an allergy clinic and takes a gun, but initially cannot bring himself to shoot her. Haunted by memories of Sarah, he traps Gretchen at the allergy clinic in a hypobaric chamber that he fills with pollen. Charlie demands to know Schiller's location but is unwilling to let Gretchen die and releases her. Gretchen escapes to the street and is fatally struck by a van.
Reader's Guide
Gretchen is defined by her past as an Armenian intelligence officer and her involvement in the hostage situation that led to Sarah Heller's death. Her major plot arc is brief: she is tracked down by Charlie in Paris, trapped in a hypobaric chamber at an allergy clinic, and killed when she is struck by a van after being released. She does not provide Charlie with Schiller's location before her death. Her interaction with Charlie is minimal but significant, as it demonstrates his internal conflict between seeking revenge and his reluctance to kill directly.
