Stone played for the Winnipeg Hawks U15 and Winnipeg Thrashers U18 AAA teams before being drafted 73rd overall by the Calgary Hitmen in the 2005 WHL Prospect Draft. In his rookie season with the Hitmen, he recorded two goals and 18 assists, sharing the team's Rookie of the Year award with Martin Jones and earning an invitation to try out for Team Canada's national men's summer under-18 team. During his sophomore season, he tied franchise records for most powerplay points, powerplay assists, and assists by a defenceman in a single game, and also tied Brad Stuart's record for longest goal streak by a defenceman. After finishing the 2007–08 season with 35 points, he was ranked 39th among North American skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau and interviewed with 15 NHL teams before being selected 69th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes. Following the draft, he attended the Coyotes' regular-season training camp in September 2008. He finished the regular season with a career-high 19 goals and 42 assists for 61 points, earning a spot on the 2008–09 East Second All-Star Team. Stone returned to the Hitmen for the 2009–10 season as co-captain, scoring six goals and seven assists in his first 13 games. By December he was tied for first among WHL defensemen in scoring with 34 points. He signed an entry-level contract with the Coyotes on December 10, 2009, and finished the season with career highs of 21 goals and 44 assists, earning a nomination for WHL Defenceman of the Year and a selection to the East First All-Star Team. He made his NHL debut on February 18, 2012, and scored his first NHL goal on March 10, 2012, finishing the 2011–12 season with one goal and two assists in 13 games.
