Early life
Jordan Martinook came into the world on July 25, 1992, in Brandon, Manitoba, but his family soon moved to Leduc, Alberta, after his father took a job in the oilpatch. Growing up there, he cheered for the Edmonton Oilers. He started his hockey career with the local Leduc Oil Kings in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League, then moved on to the Drayton Valley Thunder in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. At 16, he played two games for the Thunder before joining them full-time for the 2009–10 season, where he put up 21 goals and 19 assists for 40 points in 59 games. Martinook tried out for the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League but didn’t make the team in 2008 or 2009, and was later dropped from their 50-man protected list during the 2009–10 season. The Vancouver Giants picked up his playing rights in 2010.
Playing career
Jordan Martinook spent two seasons in the WHL with the Vancouver Giants from 2010 to 2012, putting up 51 goals and 41 assists for 92 points, along with 147 penalty minutes, over 144 games. The Phoenix Coyotes signed him to a three-year entry-level deal on September 1, 2012. After a two-year, two-way contract on July 20, 2015, he played his first full NHL season with the Coyotes, notching 9 goals and 24 points in 81 games. The next season, he had 25 points in 77 games. On July 22, 2017, the Coyotes re-signed him to a two-year contract worth $1.8 million per season, totaling $3.6 million, avoiding arbitration. On May 3, 2018, Martinook and a fourth-round pick in the 2018 draft were traded to the Carolina Hurricanes for Marcus Krüger and a third-round pick; at the time, he had 6 goals and 9 assists in 81 games with Arizona. He scored his first NHL hat-trick on November 23, 2018, in a 4-1 win over the Florida Panthers. After posting 10 goals and 13 points in 50 games, he signed a two-year extension on January 29, 2019. During the 2019 playoffs, he suffered a lower-body injury in Game 4, missed Game 5, and returned for Game 6 against the Washington Capitals, recording an assist, four hits, and two shots in 14:25 of ice time. He missed Game 1 of the second round after reaggravating the injury, came back for Game 3, and finished the postseason with four assists in 10 games. After the Hurricanes were eliminated, he had surgery to repair a core muscle injury. He was then named an alternate captain alongside Jaccob Slavin and captain Jordan Staal. The 2019-20 season started with one assist in four games, followed by another core muscle surgery on October 10. He was activated off injured reserve on November 15, 2019, after missing 15 games.
