Jennifer L. Nichols Hardy was born in Kansas City, Missouri. She started archery at age twelve and by fifteen had won the National Youth Archery Competition. At the 2004 Summer Olympics, Nichols placed 19th in the women's individual ranking round with a 72-arrow score of 638. In the elimination rounds, she defeated Puspitasari Rina Dewi of Indonesia 160–141, then beat Tetyana Berezhna of Ukraine 163–160 before losing to third-ranked Yun Mi Jin of Korea 168–162, finishing 9th. She was featured in Vogue Magazine.

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Nichols scored 637 points in the ranking round, earning the 24th seed. She defeated Ika Yuliana Rochmawati of Indonesia 114–101 in the first round but lost to ninth seed Nami Hayakawa 105–103 in the second round. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, she lost to Bishindi Urantagula of Mongolia in the round of sixteen. Nichols married Chris Hardy in September 2012.
