Aybüke Gümrükçü
Turkish recurve archer who overcame early rejection to compete internationally.
Aybüke Gümrükçü (born 14 May 1998) is a Turkish recurve archer from Samsun. She first tried tennis and archery during a summer holiday after ninth grade, at age 15. When she applied to the local club Samsun Okçuluk GSK, she was turned away for being too old and physically weak. She spent a month watching their practices and insisting on a chance. The club eventually let her try out, and after she shot well, they accepted her despite her age.
She struggled in national tournaments in 2014 and nearly quit, but her parents encouraged her to work harder. She then set a Turkish senior record of 582 points, improving the previous mark by about two points. In 2015 she became Turkish junior champion and joined the national women’s team.
Gümrükçü began archery in 2013 and made her international debut in 2015. That year she won a silver medal in the recurve team event at the World Archery Youth Championships in Yankton, South Dakota, alongside Yasemin Ecem Anagöz and Gülnaz Büşranur Coşkun. She also earned a bronze in the team event at the second leg of the European Youth Cup Ranking Circuit in Rome.
In 2016 she won a bronze medal in the senior category at the Turkish Archery Championships with her teammates. Representing her high school, she became champion at the Interschool Samsun Provincial Archery Championship. At the 2016 Gymnasiade in Trabzon, she took bronze in the individual event. She became champion in the recurve individual event at the 2017 Turkish Outdoor Archery Championships in Antalya. In 2018, with clubmates Gönül Pulat and Aysima Karaoğlu, she won gold at the Kahraman Bagatır Spring Arrows Turkey Cup.
After completing secondary education at İlkadım Fine Arts High School in Samsun, she entered Istanbul Commerce University in 2017 to study Interior Architecture on a scholarship for national athletes.
