Yavuz Papağan was born on 1 July 1987 in Muş, a city in eastern Turkey. His life took a devastating turn on 18 September 2012, when terrorists struck a military convoy on the Bingöl-Muş highway in southeastern Turkey. Nine soldiers lost their lives and seventy servicemen were wounded in the attack. Papağan, then serving as a Gendarmerie Commando Private during his compulsory military service and stationed in Tunceli, was among the wounded. A bullet struck his spinal cord, permanently robbing him of the ability to walk. His medical treatment began at the Gülhane Military Medical Academy before he was transferred to the Turkish Armed Forces Rehabilitation Center in Ankara for long-term care. It was at that very rehabilitation center that he first took up archery, discovering an entirely new purpose and identity in the sport. In 2015, the Turkish state formally recognized his sacrifice by bestowing upon him the State Medal of Honor and its accompanying certificate.

Forging a Competitive Career

Papağan transitioned into active para-archery competition in 2017, competing in the Recurve Open event under the wheelchair disability class W2. He joined Istanbul BB SK as his club.
