James Henry Breasted was an American archaeologist, Egyptologist, and historian. Born in Rockford, Illinois, in 1865, he was the first American to earn a doctorate in Egyptology, completing his PhD at the University of Berlin in 1894 under the renowned scholar Adolf Erman. He then joined the faculty of the University of Chicago, where his mentor William Rainey Harper had become president. In 1901, Breasted was appointed director of the Haskell Oriental Museum, and in 1905 he was promoted to full professor, holding the first chair in Egyptology and Oriental History in the United States. A committed field researcher, he worked extensively in Egypt and the Levant, focusing on recording and interpreting ancient writings he feared might be lost. His major publication, *Ancient Records of Egypt* (1906), remains a vital collection of translated hieroglyphic inscriptions. Breasted is also credited with popularizing the term "Fertile Crescent" to describe the archaeologically rich region of the Near East. In 1919, he founded the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago, a research center dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of ancient civilizations, with support from John D. Rockefeller Jr. That same year, he was elected to the American Philosophical Society. He married Frances Hart in 1894, and after her death in 1934, he married one of her sisters.
