Dame Kathleen Mary Kenyon (1906–1978) was a British archaeologist renowned for her work on Neolithic cultures in the Fertile Crescent, particularly her excavations at Tell es-Sultan, the site of ancient Jericho, from 1952 to 1958. Born in London, she was the eldest daughter of Sir Frederic Kenyon, a biblical scholar and director of the British Museum. Her archaeological career began in 1929 as a photographer at Great Zimbabwe with Gertrude Caton Thompson. She then worked with Mortimer and Tessa Wheeler at Verulamium, learning meticulous stratigraphic excavation. From 1931 to 1934, she excavated at Samaria with John and Grace Crowfoot, cutting a trench that exposed Iron II to Roman stratigraphy and providing key dating material. In 1934, she helped found the Institute of Archaeology at University College London. Before the war, she excavated the Jewry Wall in Leicester, initially mistaking the site for a forum before identifying it as a bath complex. During the war, she served as a Red Cross divisional commander. Afterward, she worked in Britain and Libya. Her Jericho excavations, beginning in 1951, made her world-famous, yielding groundbreaking Neolithic discoveries.
