Seeds are often arillate and mostly lack endosperm.
Taxonomically, Nymphaeaceae has been systematically studied for decades due to its floral morphology, which botanists considered early among angiosperms. Modern genetic analyses by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group confirm its basal position. The family is more genetically diverse and geographically widespread than other basal angiosperms. In the APG IV system, it belongs to the order Nymphaeales, the second diverging group of flowering plants after *Amborella*.
