Nymphaea lotus, also called the white Egyptian lotus, tiger lotus, white lotus, or Egyptian water-lily, is a species of flowering plant in the Nymphaeaceae family. It is a perennial aquatic herb that grows from rhizomes. These rhizomes are ovoid, erect, branched or unbranched, and bear leaf scars; the plant also produces slim stolons. Its floating leaves are leathery, round to nearly round, with toothed edges, measuring 10–32 cm long (sometimes up to 50 cm) and 11–28 cm wide (sometimes up to 50 cm). The leaf veins radiate from a central point.

The flowers are white or cream, fragrant or nearly odorless, and open at night. They are protogynous (female parts mature before male parts) and sit on a stalk 15–20 cm above the water. Each flower is 6–25 cm wide, with a conical receptacle. The stout, hairy stalk is 0.6–2.0 cm thick and contains six main air canals in the center and twelve smaller ones around the edge. The flower has four green, broadly oval sepals 4.5–11 cm long and 2–3.5 cm wide, and 19–20 oval petals with rounded tips. The male parts consist of 40–90 yellow stamens, and the female parts are made of 20–30 carpels. The fruit is large, round, 6–9 cm wide, and holds many seeds. The seeds are ellipsoid, 1.4–1.8 mm long and 0.9–1.2 mm wide, with a fleshy covering (aril). The fruit keeps its sepals, and the stalk does not curl up when fruiting. No proliferating false flowers (pseudanthia) are produced.

The plant has 56 chromosomes (2n = 56) and is tetraploid. Carl Linnaeus first described it in 1753, and Bernard Verdcourt designated a lectotype in 1989. It is the type species of the subgenus Nymphaea subg. Lotos.

Nymphaea lotus grows in parts of East Africa and Southeast Asia. A variety called Nymphaea lotus var. thermalis was once thought to be a relict from the Tertiary period, found only in European hot springs such as the Peța River in Romania. However, DNA analysis showed it is not genetically distinct from the main species, so it cannot be considered a relic population.

Ecologically, this plant can survive dry seasons using its rhizomes. During summer, it can reduce water evaporation by up to 18 percent on most days.

Overall, Nymphaea lotus is listed as Least Concern (LC), but in the Mediterranean region it is classified as Critically Endangered (CR).

People use the tubers and seeds as food. It is also grown as an ornamental in aquariums, where it needs bright light and water temperatures of 22–28°C. The Egyptian lotus is the national flower of Egypt. Claire Waight Keller included it on Meghan Markle's wedding veil to represent Malawi, as the veil featured distinctive plants from each Commonwealth country.

Chemically, the plant contains myricitrin, myricetin-3-(6′′-p-coumaroylglucoside), myricetin-3′-O-(6′′-p-coumaroyl)glucoside, two epimeric macrocyclic derivatives called nympholide A and B, myricetin-3-O-rhamnoside, and penta-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose.
