Characters
Kōichi Aihara is the protagonist in the game and the Various Heroines manga, a student in class 2A and the older brother of Nana. In the game his given name and surname can be customized by the player. In the anime his character was split into two: Kouichi Sanada, who received the original protagonist's looks and given name, and Kazuki Aihara, who received the original protagonist's soccer skills, surname, Nana as little sister, and voice actor from the Drama CD.
Yūmi Hoshino is the main heroine in the original visual novel, a classmate of Kouichi who works in the school library. In the anime she is Kouichi's love interest; she is shy but becomes more outgoing with help from Mao and others, and she develops feelings for Kouichi. They begin to date, but she realizes he has feelings for Mao even before he breaks up with her. Mao Mizusawa is the main heroine in the anime, an active, energetic, and cheerful student in class 3-A. In the anime she lives with Kouichi and his mother after moving back from Paris, but moves out due to her feelings for Kouichi.
Her first love interest is Eiji Kai, a quiet, tough-looking boy; they dislike each other at first but later date, though Mao breaks up with him after realizing her feelings for Kouichi. Asuka Sakino is a girl from class 2-C (in the anime she is in class 2-A with Kouichi and Kazuki) who loves soccer. In the anime she develops feelings for Kazuki after he helps her; she becomes angry when she discovers Eriko and Kazuki conducting experiments together and wants them to stop.
She realizes Kazuki is in love with Eriko, and later confesses to him but is turned down, giving him a kiss as a goodbye to her feelings. Eriko Futami is an extremely introverted girl from class 2C with an IQ of 190, who spends time alone in the science lab. In the anime she performs experiments with Kazuki, including kissing him, to understand why people fall in love; she gradually develops feelings for him and opens up, eventually professing her love and kissing him. Mitsuki Shijō is a wealthy girl from class 2-B proficient in many arts.
Adaptations
Several manga adaptations of KimiKiss have been published. KimiKiss: Lyrical contact, serialized in Gangan Powered from 2006 to 2007 and released in one tankōbon volume, focuses on Yuumi's route. KimiKiss: After days, also in Gangan Powered from December 2007 to April 2008, focuses on Eriko's route. KimiKiss: Various heroines, serialized in Young Animal and collected in five tankōbon volumes (each covering one heroine: Mao Mizusawa, Asuka Sakino, Mitsuki Shijyo, Eriko Futami, and Yuumi Hoshino), adapts all routes.
KimiKiss: Sweet lips, in Champion Red Ichigo, was released in two tankōbon volumes from December 2006 to June 2008. Two two-volume light novel series have been published by Famitsu Bunko: KimiKiss and KimiKiss: Pure Rouge. The anime, titled KimiKiss: Pure Rouge, began airing in Japan on October 6, 2007, produced by J.C.Staff and directed by Ken'ichi Kasai. It focuses more on the girls and their daily lives with a romantic genre.
North American anime distributor Section23 Films released Pure Rouge on DVD on October 5, 2010. The story follows Kouichi Sanada, who wakes from a dream of his younger self crying and finds a woman at the door who turns out to be his childhood friend Mao Mizusawa, returning from France. The narrative continues with them attending the same school, where relationships form among various characters, with Mao eventually realizing her true feelings for Kouichi while Sakino and Futami develop feelings for Kazuki.
The opening theme is by Marble, composed by Micco; ending themes are by Snow (episodes 1-12) and by Suara (episodes 13-24), composed by Shilo.
