Ace Attorney (TV series)
Anime adaptation of the first three Ace Attorney games.
Last updated
It adapts the first two games in its first season and the third game in its second season, with some original episodes and omitted cases.[1][2] During the 2015 Tokyo Game Show, the Ace Attorney TV series, an anime adaptation of the video game franchise, was first revealed.[3]
Making and release
A second season by CloverWorks adapted Trials and Tribulations and the previously omitted case "The Lost Turnabout", airing from October 6, 2018, to March 30, 2019.[2] Many original staff returned for the second season, with Takumi again collaborating.[2] Ayumu Watanabe directed the first season, which was produced by A-1 Pictures; Atsuhiro Tomioka handled series composition, while Keiko Ōta and Koji Watanabe were responsible for character design.[3] Shu Takumi, the creator of Ace Attorney, took on the role of script supervisor for the anime.[1]
On April 2, 2016, the first season premiered on NNS throughout Japan, taking over the timeslot previously held by Kindaichi Case Files R.[4] For the initial 13 episodes, Johnny's West performed the opening theme, while Rei Yasuda's "Message" served as the ending theme.[5] A prequel special lasting one hour was broadcast on January 19, 2019, and Funimation created an English dub that was released concurrently with its airing.[6] Naoyuki Kageyama's manga adaptation ran in Shueisha's V-Jump from March 2016 until July 2017, and was subsequently compiled into three volumes.[7]
What the cited sources add
Chapman criticized the animation quality as "constantly off-model and slideshow-minimal but still watchable at least"[8] He praised the adaptation's faithful recreation of the game's events and removal of "extraneous gags and details"[8] Chapman added that the adaptation fails to replicate the "surprisingly powerful impact" of playing the games firsthand.[8]
