Caillou

Caillou is a Canadian animated children's series based on Hélène Desputeaux's books, centered on a curious four-year-old boy. It first aired on Teletoon on September 15, 1997, running through its fourth season, then moved to Treehouse TV for the fifth and final season, which ended on April 17, 2011. The show also broadcast on PBS and the PBS Kids channel from 2000 to 2020. Production was handled by the CINAR Corporation (later Cookie Jar Entertainment) in Canada, with the last season co-produced by South Africa's Clockwork Zoo. A reboot was announced in 2023, originally set for later that year on Peacock with 52 eleven-minute episodes, but as of now, no specific release date or episode batch has been confirmed; the reboot has not yet premiered. The show initially received favorable reviews from critics and audiences. Over time, however, it drew significant backlash for its themes, writing, and perceived lack of educational value. The title character's misbehavior, especially in earlier seasons, was widely criticized. Caillou lives with his mother Doris, father Boris, younger sister Rosie, and pet cat Gilbert. His adventures often involve family and friends, with imagination playing a central role. In the first season, a grandmother narrator introduced each story by reading from a book to her grandchildren; from season two onward, the narrator became an unseen character. On PBS Kids, episodes from seasons one through three were structured around a theme and included animated segments, puppet skits, and live-action footage of children. Seasons four and five dropped the puppet and live-action segments, dividing episodes into three short sections. The series uses a narrator with a grandmotherly tone. Backgrounds are whitewashed and resemble dream clouds. As one critic described it, the minimalist settings feature bright primary colors, and the cat is gray with blue spots, calling it "a kindergarten teacher's bad acid trip." Episodes were broken into small, digestible segments to suit short attention spans. Caillou (voiced by Bryn McAuley from 1997 to 2000, Jaclyn Linetsky from 2000 until her 2003 death, then Annie Bovaird from 2003 to 2010) is an imaginative four-year-old who loves rocket ships and airplanes. He often daydreams, and episodes depict his daily experiences with family and friends.
