The series is set in Xadia, a continent rich in magic from six primal sources: Moon, Sky, Sun, Earth, Ocean, and Stars. Humans were once unable to use primal magic and began practicing dark magic, gifted by the Startouch Elf Aaravos, which corrupted their spirit. This led to humans being driven to western Xadia. Aaravos was later imprisoned for causing conflict, and centuries later, King Harrow and dark mage Lord Viren killed the dragon king Avizandum and stole the egg of his heir, the Dragon Prince.

The story unfolds across seven seasons, divided into two sagas. The first saga (Books One through Three) follows the journey of Callum, Ezran, and Rayla to return the Dragon Prince's egg to its mother, Queen Zubeia, ending the initial conflict.
