Characters

The series features five main characters, with the four original ones—Tayo, Gani, Lani, and Rogi—based on the four actual colors and types of Seoul Buses. Tayo is a friendly, playful, and sometimes mischievous blue bus, the third largest and third oldest of the four. In the fourth-season episode "Who Is The Real Tayo?", a clone named Star Tayo appears in one of his dreams. Tayo also appears as a minor character in Titipo Titipo, appearing in episodes such as "Going to Choo-Choo Town" and "Genie Makes a New Friend" in Season 1, and in Season 2 episodes including "A Long Haul: Part 1" and "Fix and Lift's Music Battle". His voice actors have included Robyn Slade, Monique Dami Lee, Andrea Beto, and Caroline Orejuela. Rogi is a conceited, outgoing, and mischievous green bus who is good-hearted, often getting into fights with Tayo. He has an interest in detective work, as seen in episodes like "Rogi the Detective!" and "Prank Call Madness". Rogi appeared in Titipo Titipo's second-season episodes "Oh Please, Genie", "Diesel and Rogi", and "Genie's New Friend". His voice actors include Um Sang-hyun, Nolan Blazer, Andrei Ayson, and Emerich Jimenez. Lani is a cute, cheerful, kind, and sweet-natured yellow bus who is timid, sensitive, and temperamental. She often mediates between Tayo and Rogi and is the smallest and youngest of the four. Lani appeared in Titipo Titipo's second-season episodes "Fix and Lift's Music Battle", "Welcome, Jenny", and "Oh Please, Genie". Her voice actors include Eun Yeong-seon, Kami Desilets, March Vargas, and Meggie Elise.

Cultural impact

In 2014, the Seoul Metropolitan Government commissioned buses designed as the characters Tayo, Gani, Rogi, and Lani to run around Gwanghwamun Square as part of an initiative to teach children how to use the bus. The initiative drew crowds of over 40,000 in a single day, and people from across the country came to see the buses. Originally set to run from March 26 until Public Transport Day at the end of April, the popularity led to an extension until Children's Day on May 5, and the number of buses was expanded from four to 100. Other cities in South Korea considered adopting the campaign; Seoul officials initially opposed this on copyright grounds but consented in April to let other cities use the characters for non-commercial purposes. Jaeyeon Woo of The Wall Street Journal's blog Korea Real-Time speculated in an April 2014 article that the success led both of Gyeonggi Province's gubernatorial candidates to adopt public transportation issues as a key part of their campaign platforms. Seoul mayor Park Won-soon, who began the initiative, was criticized by political rivals who felt he took credit for the series. On October 16, 2014, a South Korean group called the Teen Astronauts launched a space balloon designed as the character Tayo from the Space Science Park in Korea's National Science Museum. In late 2018, a Tayo bus phenomenon occurred in Indonesia due to its theme song, becoming one of the 15 top trending searches on Google in Indonesia in 2018. Two bus systems in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan—BRT Banjarbakula and Trans Banjarbakula—are informally called "Tayo bus" due to their size and color.
