Blue is one of the three primary colours in the RGB (additive) colour model, as well as in the RYB colour model. It lies between violet and cyan on the visible spectrum, with a dominant wavelength between approximately 450 and 495 nanometres. The clear daytime sky and the deep sea appear blue due to Rayleigh scattering; blue eyes are explained by the Tyndall effect; and distant objects appear more blue because of aerial perspective.

Blue has been important in art and decoration since ancient times. Lapis lazuli was used in ancient Egypt for jewellery and later to make ultramarine pigment. In the eighth century, Chinese artists used cobalt blue for porcelain. In the Middle Ages, European artists used blue in cathedral windows. Europeans wore woad-dyed clothing until indigo from America replaced it. In the 19th century, synthetic blue dyes replaced organic dyes and mineral pigments. Dark blue became common for military uniforms and later for business suits. Blue was chosen for the flags of the United Nations and the European Union due to its association with harmony.

The air hung thick with the cloying sweetness of rotting fruit and damp earth. Suddenly, a shard of electric blue sliced through the green gloom—not in a straight line, but in erratic, gliding arcs that defied logic. A predator paused, its eyes struggling to lock onto the shimmering, flickering target. The butterfly dipped low, landing with a whisper on a mossy log. Instantly, the brilliance died. The electric blue dissolved into the texture of dead leaves and bark. The predator's gaze swept over the deception, finding nothing but forest floor, before moving on, leaving the creature safe in its perfect invisibility.

In traditional colour theory, blue is a primary colour (with red and yellow). On the HSV colour wheel, its complement is yellow; on the RYB colour wheel, its complement is orange. Blue varies in shade and tint: darker shades include ultramarine, cobalt blue, navy blue, and Prussian blue; lighter tints include sky blue, azure, and Egyptian blue. Many blue phenomena in nature arise from structural colouration, not pigments.
