The franchise began with the 1992 film The Mighty Ducks, in which Minneapolis attorney Gordon Bombay is sentenced to community service coaching a struggling youth hockey team. The team, renamed the Ducks, learns the fundamentals and wins the championship against Bombay's former team, the Hawks. The sequel, D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994), follows Bombay as he coaches a United States team in the Junior Goodwill Games, introducing new players and winning the title. D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996) shifts focus to protégé Charlie Conway, who leads the Ducks at a prestigious academy against a hostile varsity team.

An animated series, Mighty Ducks: The Animated Series, aired for one season from 1996 to 1997, featuring humanoid-duck superheroes in a futuristic universe.
