Maroon grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, the youngest of four siblings. His father, a former Division I soccer player at St. Louis University, owned season tickets to the St. Louis Blues, and Maroon would alternate attending games with his brother. He attended Oakville High School but left before graduating to pursue junior hockey. In his youth, he played for the St. Louis Amateur Blues and competed in the 2002 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. He was nicknamed "Fat Pat" due to his size (6 ft 1 in, 260 lb) and would stickhandle a golf ball in his garage to improve his playmaking.

Maroon began his junior career with the Texarkana Bandits of the NAHL, where he was recruited by Kelly Chase and Al MacInnis. After two standout seasons—including a Robertson Cup National Championship and an NAHL MVP award—he was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2007. He spent three years in the Flyers organization before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks in November 2010. He made his NHL debut with the Ducks in the 2011–12 season and played three seasons at the NHL level with Anaheim, making an impact during their 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs run. Due to inconsistency, he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers and later the New Jersey Devils before joining his hometown St. Louis Blues in 2018.
