Last updated

Caroline Dries wrote the series, serving as executive producer with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter, and Geoff Johns.[1] The CW ordered a pilot in January 2019, and the series was picked up on May 7, 2019.[2] Ruby Rose was cast as Kate Kane / Batwoman in August 2018, with Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, and Nicole Kang joining as series regulars in January 2019.[3] The series received a full 22-episode season order on October 25, 2019.[2]

Rose left the series in May 2020, and Javicia Leslie was cast as new Batwoman Ryan Wilder in July 2020.[4][5] Season 1 was released on DVD and Blu-ray on August 18, 2020, including deleted scenes, a gag reel, and the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover.[6] At The CW's upfront presentation in May 2018, network president Mark Pedowitz and Stephen Amell announced that Batwoman would appear in the 2018 Arrowverse crossover "Elseworlds," which aired in December 2018.[7] The pilot episode's production started on March 4, 2019, in Vancouver, British Columbia, and wrapped on March 25, 2019, with extra filming occurring in Chicago, Illinois.[8]

What the cited sources add

Mitovitch noted the central dynamic between Kate and her twin sister Alice would be lost with a new lead.[9] Miller also questioned how a new protagonist would affect the supporting cast, whose connections to Kate were "their primary reason for being a part of the show's storyline"[10] Ruby Rose revealed she required emergency surgery after a stunt injury that left her facing possible paralysis.[11]
