Beverly Hills, 90210 (franchise)
Last updated
The Beverly Hills, 90210 franchise is a media franchise created by Darren Star and owned by CBS Studios, comprising six American television series.[1] The franchise's storyline advances in real time, starting with the 1990 premiere of Darren Star's teen drama Beverly Hills, 90210, which was produced by Aaron Spelling and first broadcast on FOX.[2] Young audiences have generally responded favorably to the franchise, and certain characters have crossed over into multiple series within the same narrative universe.[3]
Making and release
During the 1989–1990 period, FOX executives discovered Darren Star's desire to write scripts aimed at young viewers as they were developing a new teen drama.[4] Aaron Spelling, whose production company handled the shows, had a reputation for creating popular series such as Charlie's Angels (1976–81), The Love Boat (1977–86), and Dynasty (1981–89).[5] Star's own career ambitions in his twenties served as the initial inspiration for Melrose Place, while FOX's request for an eight-part summer series from Spelling led to the creation of Models Inc.[4] In 1994, Spelling went on to produce Models Inc., the next installment in the franchise.[5]
The franchise made a comeback in 2008 with its fourth series, 90210, which drew a fresh group of well-known creators.[6] Fox ordered a six-episode revival called BH90210, as announced on February 27, 2019.[7]
What the cited sources add
The series Beverly Hills, 90210 has been called "one of the definitive shows of the 1990s" and was nominated for "Best Drama" at the Golden Globe Awards in 1992 and 1993.[8] Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker criticized the original tone of Melrose Place in a 1992 article but admitted to being "hypnotized by it."[9] When 90210 premiered, it achieved the highest ratings for a scripted debut in the history of The CW network.[10]
