Synopsis
The show centers on Allegra, a little girl navigating the ups and downs of everyday life. She is joined by her older brother Rondo, her best friend Lindi (a yellow dog), a mischievous blue cat named Riff, and a green boy named Poco. Together, with help from their neighbors, they explore the world around them. Each episode ends with Allegra sitting at her window, thinking back on what she has learned. Music is a core part of the series, with characters whose names are inspired by musical terms, including Lindi, Rondo, Riff, Poco, Reed, Miss Melody, Ellington, Encora, Sonata, Clef, Woofer, Aria, Tweeter, Flugie, and Vi. The show also includes segments featuring talking musical instruments that reside on the wall of Reed’s Music shop. Over 100 original songs were made for the series, overseen by musical director Don Sebesky. The name Allegra came about when creator Jan Fleming, after meeting a young girl named Allegra at a dinner party hosted by London academics, decided it was the perfect name for her main character.
Characters
Allegra, performed by Kathryn Mullen, is the title character, a 3-year-old girl learning about the world outside her home. She is brave and relies on her friends to solve problems; she has curly doodle hair and is the leader of the gang. Rondo, performed by Anthony Asbury, is Allegra's 6-year-old older brother who acts tough but is protective of his sister. He is in the first grade and sometimes walks upside down with his shoes on. Lindi, performed by Pam Arciero, is a yellow dog and Allegra's best friend who lives with Reed. She is feisty and acts as a voice of reason, enjoying mud play and ballet. Riff, voiced by Martin P. Robinson, is a grumpy blue cat and Rondo's best friend who often takes advantage of Allegra's naivety and targets Mr. Cook, but becomes nicer over time. Mr. Cook, performed by Tim Lagasse, is the town baker who is frequently the butt of Riff's antics; he is upbeat, speaks in third person and broken English, and refers to others by their personality and appearance. Poco, voiced by Anthony Asbury, is Mr. Cook's nephew, the funniest and most curious character, who tells jokes and teams up with the others; he speaks in third person and is 2½ years old, appearing in the second and third seasons. Reed, played by Bob Stillman, is a musician who runs the town's music shop and is Lindi's master; in the first season he was forgetful. Miss Melody, played by Andrea Frierson, is a teacher who runs Little Blue Daycare and favors Allegra. Ellington, played by Harry Burney, is the oldest resident of Hummingbird Alley, kind and gentle to everyone, and appears only in the first season.
