Baywatch was an American drama series that followed lifeguards patrolling the beaches of Los Angeles County and later Hawaii, with David Hasselhoff in the lead role. The show was created by Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz, and Gregory J. Bonann, who also produced it across eleven seasons. Its storylines balanced the professional duties and personal lives of the characters, played by a large, frequently changing ensemble that included Pamela Anderson, Alexandra Paul, Gregory Alan Williams, Jeremy Jackson, Parker Stevenson, David Chokachi, Billy Warlock, Erika Eleniak, David Charvet, Yasmine Bleeth, and Nicole Eggert.
Though NBC canceled the series after its first season, it found new life in syndication and eventually became the most-watched television program globally, drawing over 1.1 billion viewers each week. This success came despite consistently poor critical reviews, and the show became a pop culture landmark, widely referenced and parodied. It aired under its original title and format from 1989 to 1999, then continued as *Baywatch: Hawaii* from 1999 to 2001, with a new setting and a largely overhauled cast.

Hasselhoff appeared in the most episodes (206, including the pilot), followed by Jeremy Jackson (117), Michael Newman (109), and Pamela Anderson (77). When the show moved to Hawaii, most longtime cast members departed, leaving only Hasselhoff, Brooke Burns, Michael Bergin, and Michael Newman. After the tenth season, Hasselhoff and Newman also left, leaving Bergin and Burns as the last links to the original Los Angeles era.
The idea for *Baywatch* came when Gregory J. Bonann, while working as a lifeguard, rescued two children of an MTM studio employee named Stu Erwin.

Originally called Aquatic Corps for Emergency Service (ACES), the title was changed to Baywatch, the name of rescue boats patrolling Santa Monica Bay.
