The film follows Sophie Rice, who eight months after her husband Malcolm's death by a drunk driver, is struggling with depression and a strained relationship with her daughter Riley. Malcolm's best friend, physicist Jabir Karim, reveals a time machine he and Malcolm built that can send a subatomic particle to a past time and place, killing any living being it appears within. Sophie and Jabir use the machine to kill the drunk driver before the accident, creating a new timeline where Malcolm lives, though only they remember the original timeline.

As Sophie enjoys Malcolm's return, she becomes disturbed by unintended changes to the timeline. She befriends the drunk driver's widow and daughter, who are now destitute, and the group uses the machine again to help them, but this results in Sophie and Malcolm's daughter being replaced by a son they do not know. Ultimately, they agree to let Jabir use the machine to save his own family, erasing the machine's existence and leaving Sophie's fate unknown as she arrives home in the final scene.
